Living in Mallorca: waiting for summer 2019

Dear readers, since we've been here for almost 6 months we wanted to share with you our considerations on LIVING IN PALMA DE MALLORCA.

Cari lettori, visto che siamo qui da quasi 6 mesi volevamo condividere con voi le nostre considerazioni sul VIVERE A PALMA DE MALLORCA.
WINTER IN PALMA
Let's start by saying that we arrived here the last September, the weather was still beautiful and it was hot... the months to follow have been a bit hard for the pirates who landed on a new island, the time to make the necessary papers and go in search for work!
We worked in restaurants and noticed several underpaid work environments, others below our expectations, we also refused some good offers to do the season outside Palma.. we adapted and we were ready at the right time before the beginning of the season. In March we were already doing our 'walk-around' with Curriculums in the areas where we would have liked to live and we also took the opportunity to explore the island a little...
Winter has been longer than expected and I personally felt cold as for almost a year were used to tropical weather in Costa Rica and flip-flops every day... not to mention that the last two months we haven't worked much but done a trillion of interviews, some good, others ... better not to express ourselves ...!
Luckily, on our 30s both Carlo and I are able to adapt to every situation...
INVERNO A PALMA
Iniziamo dicendo che siamo arrivati qui lo scorso fine settembre, il tempo era ancora splendido e faceva caldo… i mesi a seguire sono stati un po ‘ duri per i pirati approdati su una nuova isola, il tempo di fare le carte necessarie e via in cerca di lavoro!
Abbiamo lavorato in ristorazione e notato diversi ambienti di lavoro sottopagati, altri sotto le nostre aspettative, abbiamo anche rifiutato alcune buone offerte per fare la stagione fuori da Palma.. ci siamo adattati e ci siamo fatti trovare pronti nel momento giusto prima dell’inizio della stagione. A marzo eravamo già a fare i nostri giri di Curriculum nelle zone in cui ci sarebbe piaciuto abitare ed abbiamo anche colto l’occasione per esplorare un po’ l’isola…
L’inverno è stato più lungo del previsto e personalmente ho sentito freddo abituata per quasi ad un anno di clima tropicale in Costa Rica e alle infradito tutti i giorni… senza contare che gli ultimi due mesi non abbiamo lavorato ma fatto un trilione di colloqui, alcuni buoni, altri… meglio non esprimersi…!
Meno male che sui nostri 30 anni sia io che Carlo siamo in gradi di adattarci ad ogni situazione….
NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUMMER
And Spring brings new job opportunities too...
I found a job as barista in the 'Café - Panaderia' (bakery) right down the street where we live, where I sell bread, coffee and croissants, even though I only work on weekends, the owners are very sociable, they have signed a regular contract and the amount of work is relatively easy...
I could not hoped for better at the moment especially because they are from Palma and it is therefore perfect to learn the Majorcan quick (it reminds me very much of Bergamo's dialect ..: D).
I also started working online for a health and wellness company and I'm really happy to have embarked on this new business adventure. Already in Costa Rica I had been interested in this type of business and now that I am back in Europe I took the chance and started this online activity that I can manage part-time from home! It is true... I started recently but I really see some good prospects! Furthermore, I have never undertaken a health and wellness program before and I am curious to see the results on me!
No one said it would be easy... it takes perseverance and determination... But the freedom this business is giving me is truly incredible! It's been two years since we started the Travel Pirates project and I'm finally succeeding in becoming independent! Would you like to know more? Carlo, on the other hand, found a job as bartender / waiter in a hotel chain near Cala Mayor, a hotel with a swimming pool that can hold 600/1000 people without problems ... he started a week ago so he still have to get used to the intense pace however he is very happy to have found a job 5 days a week with free Saturdays and Sundays…. This is a luxury for those who are "food warriors" ...: D
NUOVE OPPORTUNITA’ PER L’ESTATE
E con la primavera vengono anche le nuove opportunità lavorative…
Io ho trovato lavoro come barista nella ‘Caffetteria-Panaderia’ (panificio) sotto casa, dove vendo pane, caffè e brioches, anche se lavoro solo il fine settimana, i proprietari sono molto socievoli, mi hanno fatto contratto in regola e la mole di lavoro è relativamente facile…. non potevo sperare di meglio per il momento soprattutto perché loro sono di Palma ed è quindi perfetto per apprendere il maiorchino in fretta (mi ricorda molto il dialetto bergamasco.. :D ).
Inoltre ho iniziato a lavorare online per una compagnia di salute e benessere e sono veramente felice di aver intrapreso questa nuova avventura lavorativa. Già in Costa Rica mi ero interessata a questo tipo di business ed ora che sono tornata in Europa ho colto l’occasione al volo ed ho iniziato questa attività online che posso gestire part-time da casa! E’ vero… ho iniziato da poco ma vedo davvero delle belle prospettive! Inoltre non ho mai intrapreso un programma di salute e benessere prima d’ora e sono curiosa di vedere i risultati su di me!
Nessuno ha detto che sarebbe stato facile… ci vuole costanza e determinazione…. Ma la libertà che mi sta dando questo business è veramente incredibile! E’ già da due anni che abbiamo iniziato il progetto dei Travel Pirates e finalmente sto riuscendo passo dopo passo a diventare indipendente! Volete saperne di più? Vi potrebbe interessare lavorare part-time da casa con il vostro laptop? Inviatemi un messaggio in privato!
Carlo invece ha trovato lavoro come barista/cameriere in una nota catena di hotel spagnola vicino a Cala Mayor, un hotel con piscina che può tenere 600/1000 persone senza problemi… ha iniziato da una settimana perciò ancora si deve abituare al ritmo intenso però è molto felice nell’aver trovato un lavoro 5 giorni su 7 con il sabato e la domenica liberi…. Questo è un lusso per chi è un ‘guerrigliero della ristorazione’… :D
SEARCH FOR A RENTAL HOUSE - FIRST DIFFICULTIES
The winter months were tough not only for work but also for finding a house... Yes, because here in Mallorca and in Spain without a permanent work contract they do not allow you to take a rented house ... and therefore no work no home!
We are still in our bedroom found on AirB&B, in an old 4 floors building without elevator a stone's throw from Plaza d'Espanya, where we share the house with 4/5 people and two cats, we save compared to an apartment but we don't have our freedom, especially it becomes a bit complicated when it comes to cooking ... but the owner is really nice and friendly, allow us to use all the utilities and the cats are lovely...
The thing I miss the most is having a window with a beautiful view and see the sea, but for reasons we stayed in the center..
Today we moved to a larger room, we needed a little more space and I am very happy to have a balcony that overlooks the Parque Ses Estaciones, my window to the world!!!
RICERCA DI UNA CASA – PRIME DIFFICOLTA’
I mesi invernali sono stati duri non solo a livello lavorativo ma anche per via di ricerca di una casa… Si perché qui a Mallorca ed in Spagna senza un contratto di lavoro fisso non ti permettono di prendere una casa in affitto… e quindi senza lavoro niente casa! Ci troviamo ancora nella nostra cameretta trovata su AirB&B, in un vecchio palazzone di 4 piani senza ascensore a due passi da Plaza d’Enspanya, dove condividiamo la casa con altre 4/5 persone e due gatte, risparmiamo rispetto ad un appartamento ma non abbiamo la nostra libertà, soprattutto diventa un po’ complicato quando si tratta di cucinare… ma la proprietaria è molto gentile ed amichevole, ci permette di utilizzare la sua casa ed i gatti sono adorabili..
La cosa che mi manca di più è avere una finestra con una bella vista e vedere il mare, ma per esigenze siamo rimasti in centro.
Oggi ci siamo spostati in una camera più grande, avevamo bisogno di un po’ più di spazio e sono molto felice di avere un balconcino che da sul lato del Parque Ses Estaciones, la mia finestra sul mondo!!!
LIVING AS EXPAT
Living as an expat is never as easy as you might think... Last year we were in Costa Rica trying a different kind of life with a very slow bureaucracy and no possibility of working, not to mention that the cost of living was expensive and we have lived with the bare minimum. We realized our dream of living in the most uncontaminated nature, a true tropical paradise, for 10 months we planned to open one of our little shot but the experience did not go the way we wanted and we found ourselves turning the globe and choosing another country.
Now we have been here in Palma for 6 months and still we have not been able to find stability, a house and a stable work, the costs of rents are too high and there is a lot of competition, not to mention that in winter you can end up not working for at least 2 / 3 months... all of this is making us tothink and plan for another journey in search of our inner stability... life can't be just work and no fun!
This is our personal experience, we are neither complaining or discrediting the Island, because living as an expat takes time to stabilize first and foremost in a new place and we are poor pirates, we live with little and possess few material things... if you are not ready for this kind of challenge it is useless that you leave your country!
If you knew how many times we changed plans, but life is like that.. it makes you find two tracks in the woods and we have chosen the least traveled one!

VITA DA 'EXPAT'
La vita da Expat non è mai così facile come si potrebbe pensare… L’anno scorso eravamo in Costa Rica a tentare un tipo di vita differente con una burocrazia molto lenta e senza possibilità di lavorare, senza contare che il costo della vita era caro e noi abbiamo vissuto con il minimo essenziale. Abbiamo realizzato il nostro sogno di vivere nella natura più incontaminata, un vero paradiso tropicale, per 10 mesi abbiamo pianificato di aprire un nostro piccolo locale però l’esperienza non è andata come volevamo e ci siamo trovati a girare il mappamondo e scegliere un’altra meta.
Adesso siamo qui a Palma da 6 mesi ed ancora non siamo riusciti a trovare stabilità, casa e lavoro, i costi degli affitti sono troppo alti e c’è molta concorrenza, senza contare che l’inverno si può finire a non lavorare per almeno 2/3 mesi… tutto ciò ci sta facendo pensare e pianificare per un altro viaggio alla ricerca della nostra stabilità interiore… life can’t be just work and no fun!
Questa è la nostra esperienza personale, non ci stiamo né lamentando né discreditando la Isla, perché vivere da expat richiede tempo per stabilizzarsi in primis in un luogo nuovo e noi siamo pirati poveri, viviamo con poco e possediamo poche cose materiali… se non siete pronti per questo tipo di sfida inutile che partite!
Sapeste quante volte abbiamo cambiato i piani, ma la vita è fatta così, ti fa trovare due strade nel bosco e noi abbiamo scelto quella meno battuta!

We hope that this condition will change in the future, we are positive and determined, it is already 2 years that we are traveling without a real home, we begin to feel the need to settle down, but I believe that we will have to stay here for the moment, given also the arrival of the summer and with it the disproportionate flow of tourists (so we were told, for us it will be the first summer in Palma) ...
We are pirates after all, so all sails set and wind in the stern towards the summer 2019!

Spero che questa condizione cambi in futuro, siamo positivi e determinati! Sono già 2 anni che siamo in viaggio senza una vera casa ed iniziamo a sentire il bisogno di sistemarci, ma credo che ci toccherà accontentarci per il momento visto anche l’arrivo dell’estate e con esso il flusso spropositato di turisti (così ci è stato detto, per noi sarà la prima estate a Palma)…
Siamo pirati in fin dei conti, quindi vele spiegate e vento in poppa verso l’estate 2019!
